Forest Therapy began in the 1980’s when the Japanese were transitioning to a tech base economy. That meant people were spending a lot of time inside and the government noticed a huge spike in health related problems. After research they discovered a chemical created by trees called phytoncides helps keep the human body healthy. This is a natural and normal chemical, kinda like the essential oils of the tree, rains down from trees and is this is where the nickname Forest Bathing comes from. When humans breath in or absorb it through our skin, it activates our bodies to produce a special white blood cell, the NK cell, and this roams throughout our bodies looking for cancers and viruses to destroy. The human body really needs this natural essence to help us maintain our health. During the Forest Therapy sessions, we are bathing in the atmosphere of these phytoncides while being guided through a series of invitations or questions.
Forest Therapy isn’t just therapeutic for your body, but also your mind. Connecting with your senses will draw attention away from the thinking mind, and is calming to the body.
We spend so much of our life thinking, analyzing, and we have become so accustomed to being fully plugged in to life, and trapped within our minds. This leads to stress, anxiety, overthinking, which is well known to contribute to many other health problems.
Forest Therapy nurtures a relationship within yourself and with nature, which is therapeutic for our bodies as well as our mental and even emotional health.
